The Oude Molen Village is located in the eastern part of the Valkenberg estate which until 1994 housed the Valkenberg mental hospital with the Black river dividing the area between coloured and white patients. The character of the estate is determined by the Wetlands (the Liesbeek and the Black river), Devil’s peak, its history and the particularity of its ancient buildings.
"The place is diverse, it is a sustainable development show case that incorporates organic farming, alternative energies, patients rehabilitation program, community gardens, recreation opportunities, public exhibitions, social initiatives, recycling program, educative venues and all of this against the backdrop of light industries, crafters and artists" (Dan Niesser chairperson OMVA)
